I can’t spell. However there are people all around me who can spell. I always end up feeling like such a dunce when I learn a new spelling after I know I have typed it for the whole world to see, and not a single person has corrected me. It really does some damage to the self-esteem. Now I am not talking about the difference between their, there, and they’re or here and hear. Those I understand, I do admit that sometimes (often) I can’t remember if a work has “ie” or “ei” or any double letters. I do not know why I have such a hard time with spelling rules like that, but I do. And I wish people would point out when I have some letters mixed up, or missing, or extra. This does not go for commas, I like to use them. Please help, and please be gentle about it. Thanks.

Well, my browser just crashed after I wrote a long long long comment and so I don’t really remember what I had typed so I will just say, spelling is not too very important that it needs be over-emphasized. And if there are things that are in dire need of being correctly spelt then we have spell check, and if this comes from a time that spell-checking is not available, such as writting on a chalk-board or such, lett the people reading know, too bad. Also the “ie or ei” rules are just another scam of the textbook publishers don’t worry about them.

If I know what is meant I usually don’t really notice. There are some words that I almost always spell wrong especially if they have an “r or rr” in them, I always want to have a double r, more is better, right? So, if I don’t say anything then it probably isn’t a big deal, but since we seem to have similar desires to spell correctly, I do understand your want to be gently corrected. I used to carry a dictionary with me just to be able to spell words correctly. I learned the need for a good dictionary back in elementary school. I love spell check and wish each sheet of paper or writing utensil came with one.
Most spelling errors don’t bother me when they are made by most people. So I don’t normally say much about them. Now when I notice spelling errors in books or other things that have editors and people in charge of checking those things out they do bother me.
I will try to be more conscious of your spelling so I can help you.
Plus, since I am no longer in school and it doesn’t matter how I spell things I am not doing too hot on my spelling either.
